This blog is an attempt to discuss the essential philosophy of Advaita Vedanta in a scientific, philosophical and "traditional-religion"-agnostic point of view.

Swami Vivekananda said: “We are responsible for what we are, and whatever we wish ourselves to be, we have the power to make ourselves. If what we are now has been the result of our own past actions, it certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in future can be produced by our present actions; so we have to know how to act.

Of course this is not to say that there aren’t things beyond our control. Things can happen with equal probability. Past actions and happenings affect the present and the future. It may not be one action but a set of actions together that cause these effects. Chaos Theory calls this the Butterfly Effect - the fluttering of wings of a single butterfly today can cause major climatic changes a million years from now. This snowball effect of actions in our world along with the intersection of waves of all objects and events at different times can cause unpredictable results – true randomness. And these are beyond our control. To fully control it you will need to control the seemingly infinite variables in play for a seemingly infinite amount of time!

But rest assured there is no one force/energy/God that is trying to write your destiny. The Absolute God does not care about you, your well being or your misery. It just exists as a silent viewer – and if you want you can think of its existence as the existence within the fabric of the space and time of Maya.
